I have been doing web design and development part-time since 1996. Recently though, I went out on my own to be a full-time self-employed web developer. Side note: if you are thinking about going out on your own, don't do it in the middle of an unstable economy. :)

I work with a lot of different clients, some directly with the client, some as a sub-contractor. Either way, I try to get a client where they can update their web site themselves using some kind of Content Management System (Open-Source or custom).
